As an enrichment of their science curriculum, second-grade students in Bellmore’s Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center recently enjoyed a visit from the Magnet Man. Brian Wallrapp, a science consultant for Bellmore, visited with each second-grade class to give them a special lesson on magnets and their properties.
“There is no magic behind science, but there is science behind magic,” Mr. Wallrapp said.
During the visit, the students performed experiments, including discovering magnetite in Jones Beach sand and that hematite is 10 times stronger than a regular magnet. Students were also encouraged to use their knowledge of matter to create precise definitions using scientific terms such as attract and repel.
