To welcome students to a new school year, promote literacy, and discuss bullying and the District’s Core Values, Sally Curto, principal of the Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore, visits each class throughout September to read a book with the students. “My main objective is for the children to understand that I have high expectations for good behavior and that I am available to help if they need an adult to work out a problem,” she remarked.

Mrs. Curto will also begin her popular Principal’s Book Club, where students share with each other what they’re reading on their free time. “They inspire me and they inspire each other to try different books,” said Mrs. Curto. The Book Club runs for eight weeks in the fall and picks up again in the spring.
