Our Living Planet

As an extension of their science and geography curriculum, third-grade students at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore explored a 19-foot inflatable replica of the earth as part of the “Our Living Planet” program. Experiencing the same view astronauts get from space, the students examined the “Earth Balloon” in its entirety in their school gymnasium. The third graders observed the silk-screened outer portion of the earth and then crawled inside for insight on everything from plate tectonics to political geography and biomes from educational consultant Rich Brundige. Topics of conversation included geography, climate, and culture.
