In an effort to teach its students about the democratic process, Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore hosted student advisory council elections in early November. Fourth-graders were able to run for secretary and president, while third-graders were on the ballot for vice president. To get the word out on their candidacy, the students created campaign posters and were each responsible for drafting a speech and delivering it to the entire student body expressing the reasons he or she would be the best candidate for the position. Following the speeches, each third- and fourth-grade class voted for their preferred candidate.
