With fellow classmates and proud family members watching from the audience, 14 students from Bellmore's Winthrop Avenue School put their knowledge of the English language to the test in the annual fourth-grade spelling bee. Following his correct spelling of the words “natural” and “straight,” Param Nagpal from Kathy Marks’ class placed first, with Sam Luckman from Gina Foppiano’s class named the runner-up. Both Param and Sam were awarded gift cards to Barnes and Noble.

To qualify for the schoolwide bee, each student competed in classroom bees where they placed in the top two of their class. In addition to Param and Sam, Noel Batista, Alyssa Cammiso, Kelly Diebold, Samantha Einbinder, Jaime Heffez, Sophia Israel, Jared Levine, Kylie Matulich, Christopher Prainito, Joshua Vayman, Reese Wielstein and Emily Yucht participated in the spelling bee.
