Students at Winthrop Avenue School spent the morning of April 22 paying tribute to their former classmate, Korri Haimson, who passed away earlier this school year. Dressed in purple, those in attendance celebrated the life of Korri and remembered her for her loving spirit and favorite saying, “Smiles are free.”

During the brief ceremony, members of Korri’s Girl Scout troop, Troop 964, planted a tree in her honor and sang the children’s song “This Little Light of Mine.” Additionally, the PTA planted a separate tree with a plaque that reads, “Please share a smile with someone today, and try to do so every day, and when you do, please think of me, and always remember…Smiles Are Free – Korri.” The PTA also donated a bench with Korri’s saying.

“The bench is here to serve as a reminder of Korri’s wonderful life,” said Principal Sally Curto.

To conclude the program, music teacher Erica Davis led the students in the original song “Smiles Are Free.”
