In a discussion held prior to the Feb. 11 Board of Education meeting, members of the district’s Curriculum Advisory Committee presented information on reading instruction for kindergarten through sixth grade to the Board and administration. The CAC consists of teachers from throughout the district who meet frequently during the school year to discuss the curriculum and share ideas and strategies. Once a year, members of the committee present a topic to the Board of Education.

The CAC discussed small-group instruction, guided reading, reading groups and the developmental reading assessment, which is an invaluable tool that allows teachers to work one-on-one with every student to gather information on his or her reading strengths and weaknesses. The teachers also discussed what students are learning in each grade level, from kindergartners learning how to decode unfamiliar words to the use of informational texts, such as historical fiction, to address cross-curricular needs.
