The scent of candy, graham crackers and icing wafted through the air of Angela Coogan’s first-grade classroom at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center as students and their parents crafted gingerbread houses in celebration of the holidays.

During a weeklong unit, the class studied the ways in which holidays are celebrated at home and in other countries, including Mexico, Sweden, Israel and Germany. Making gingerbread was a culminating activity for the students’ exploration of the German holiday celebration.

Using a milk carton, the students built the walls of their houses with graham crackers. After spreading icing on the roof and walls, they added colorful candies and gooey marshmallow treats to create a holiday decoration to be remembered.
