As an extension of their in-class lessons on maps and globes, the second-grade students at Bellmore’s Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center explored a map of Long Island. Anne Johnson and Fanny Kleisler, naturalists from Nassau BOCES, brought the 25’x36’ floor map to the school and allowed the students to participate in hands-on and feet-on activities. The second graders were able to practice their map reading skills and better understand map scales and geographic concepts. Using the map’s legend, the students explored various areas of Long Island, from Long Beach City to the South Shore’s Southampton beaches and the North Shore’s Orient Point. They also pinpointed the approximate location of Bellmore.
