Keeping It Local

As an extension of their unit on biographies of entrepreneurs, fifth-graders in Jennifer Desmond’s class at Bellmore’s Shore Road School interviewed local business owners. In class, the students were tasked with starting their own companies, which included inventing a concept, devising a plan and using their art skills to create business cards. Professions represented included an artist, real estate agent, baker, car dealer, attorney, interior designer, Tupperware salesman and owner of a pool company.

“We thought it would be a great opportunity for the students to ask neighborhood business owners what their inspiration was when starting their own businesses, and to see if they could offer any advice to the students,” remarked Desmond.

To thank the community members for volunteering their time to the students, the fifth-graders wrote biographies on each business owner.
