Every fall, thousands of families across Long Island visit local farms to pick apples that they will enjoy in a variety of favorite recipes. At Bellmore’s Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center, first-grade students in Angela Coogan’s class sampled an assortment of apple products – Red Delicious apples, applesauce, Applejacks cereal and apple chips – to discover their favorites. Using a SmartBoard, the young students graphed and interpreted the results as part of their math unit. With more than half the class agreeing, Applejacks cereal was the most popular apple product tasted by the first-graders!
To prepare for their taste test, the students put their artistic skills to use by creating hats to wear during their samplings, read books about apples, including “Amelia Bedelia’s First Apple Pie,” and learned about apples during a science lesson.
