With their dancing shoes on and their excitement to learn about various cultures, Winthrop students are participating in a five-week dance unit with Circle of Dance instructor Carissa Basedow. During the unit, the students will learn Chinese ribbon dancing, American style of dancing, dance steps native to Africa, the Mexican hat dance and the capoeira from Brazil.

Ms. Basedow explained that the dance unit’s goal is to raise cultural awareness of dances throughout the world and for the students to have fun through movement. During instruction, students also hone memory skills by memorizing dance steps and develop body and personal space awareness.
