The second-grade students at Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore received a special lesson in magnets. Brian Wallrapp, a former teacher and current science consultant for the district, visited each second-grade class to teach them the properties of magnets. During his visit, the students learned the unit of measure used for the strength of a magnet (gauss) and performed fun experiments utilizing paper clips and a neodymium (12,300 gauss) magnet, as well as an electromagnet (200,000 gauss). Students were encouraged to use their knowledge of matter to create precise definitions using scientific terms such as “attract” and “repel.”
