The kindergarten, first-grade, and second-grade students at Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore are working on their logic skills and problem-solving abilities through the game of chess. The Chess Club is a group of almost 200 students who meet once a week for four weeks, during their lunchtime recess, to learn and advance their chess skills. Offered through the PTA, the students receive their instruction from local chess masters, all of whom are members of the Long Island Chess Nuts.

The club, open to beginners as well as advanced players, allows students to learn and perfect their skills. Each week begins with a ten-minute lesson on the rules and strategies of chess; the remaining time is used for students to compete against each other, based upon skill level. During this time, the advisor walks around and offers advice and tips for each child to improve their game.
