Earlier this year, students in Amanda Kowalski’s class at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore wrote letters to Miss Kowalski’s nephew, Lance Corporal Michael Reyes of the United States Marines, and the soldiers in his unit. To thank the students for their thoughtfulness, Lance Corporal Reyes visited the students. Dressed in his uniform, he informed the students that he and his unit are helping to build schools and hospitals while overseas, spoke of the traditions of the Marines, and answered questions about his uniform and the medals. “The kids thought he was a superhero,” said Miss Kowalski. “They got to see where their letters went and what it meant for him and his unit to receive those letters.”
