Journeying into History

Social studies came to life for fifth graders at Bellmore’s Shore Road School as Journeys into American Indian Territory, an organization that specializes in teaching students about Native American traditions, visited the school.

During the two-day program, the students were given the opportunity to explore a museum of Native American artifacts. Some of the many interesting objects on display included clothing, tools, and a full-sized family tipi. The organization also conducted various activities including storytelling, native games, arts and crafts, and songs and dances, which provided students with first-hand experiences that reflected the depth of tribal history.

As a culminating event, the students in each fifth-grade class participated in their own vision quest, a turning point in a young Native American’s life taken to find oneself and one’s intended spiritual and life direction. During their quest, the students pictured themselves in a forest surrounded only by nature. Following their quest, the fifth graders created a shield craft using paper plates in place of shields, Q-tips in place of buffalo bones, and paint to depict what they experienced on their individual quests.

A Day in the Life

Winthrop Avenue School hosted “Journey into American Indian Territory” for two full-day, in-house field trips. In conjunction with the current curriculum, Native American studies educational experts, focusing specifically on Eastern Woodland tribes, visited each school, playing traditional Indian games, re-telling historical stories, and interacting with a museum of authentic Indian artifacts, some of which are still utilized to this day.

Throughout the two days, students were provided with an in-depth look into the culture of Native American Indians. A museum displayed artifacts from every aspect of life, including clothing, tools, cooking utensils, games, artwork and even a fully-constructed longhouse. Each artifact was described to students with a background story and lesson. Students learned how Native American Indians respected each other, nature and animals, which laid the foundation for their flourishing society. Traditions of teamwork and equality, deeply rooted in the culture, were portrayed through stories of agriculture.

Students were able to gain hands-on experience by simulating tribal games such as King and Pin, as well as by crafting an original clay pot to bring home and discuss with their families.

The Peaceful Bus

This school year, the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore implemented the Peaceful Bus Program. Throughout the year, the students will meet with specific staff members who are identified as their bus team leaders. They will engage in a variety of activities as a bus community, aimed at building a greater sense of camaraderie and respect for each other on the bus. The role of the bus driver will also be elevated, and the students will begin to see their drivers as an extension of the school.

To kick off the program, teachers performed a short skit that reinforced how the school is integrating the Bellmore Stars Core Values of integrity, respect, dedication, trust and teamwork with this program. Dressed as characters from “The Wizard of Oz,” the teachers visited “the Wizard” to gain the core values necessary for good behavior and a peaceful bus.

“This proactive program teaches students to be responsible ‘rising stars’ and to respect themselves and each other. Most importantly, it helps each student to be safe on the bus,” remarked Principal Clifford Molinelli.

Onward and Upward for Shore Road’s Class of 2011

Hundreds of bright-eyed sixth-grade students at Shore Road School proved their readiness for the anticipated move to Grand Avenue Middle School during the District’s annual graduation ceremony. Board of Education members, administrators, parents, and invited guests proudly attended the graduation of the Shining Stars as the students were rewarded for their six years of hard work.

Offering advice to the sixth graders who are making the transition to the middle school, retiring Principal Christine Augusto remarked, “Adjusting to a new school is not always easy at first, but we are confident that you will quickly adapt to your environment and try your best to meet your own, and your teachers’, expectations. You must believe in yourself, put time and effort into your studies, and have confidence in your ability to succeed. When you are focused and determined, anything is possible…seize the day, and always put your best foot forward.”

The graduates also received words of wisdom from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph S. Famularo, Board of Education President Jay L. T. Breakstone, and PTA Co-Presidents Kim Goldberg and Barbara Haimson.

During the ceremony, audience members were treated to musical performances by the sixth-grade band and orchestra, while the entire sixth grade sang Miley Cyrus’s “Wherever I Go.” The audience was also treated to a special performance of “Shore Road State of Mind,” set to the music of Jay-Z’s “New York State of Mind.” Juliette Kealy and Jillian Rossi wrote the song.

Following the presentation of diplomas, the newly-appointed elementary school graduates gathered with parents, family members, and friends to take time and rejoice in their accomplishments. Congratulations to the graduates; in the words of Dr. Famularo, “Remember, you will always be Bellmore Stars.”

SHORE ROAD STUDENTS CREATE SWEET TREATS FOR TROOPS

Fifth and sixth-grade students in Jessica McDaniel's and Anne Craine’s classes at Shore Road School in the Bellmore School District recently took a field trip to King Kullen, where students worked on their functional social and math skills. During their excursion, the students purchased food items that were later used to create a trail mix to be sent overseas to troops in honor of Memorial Day. Each student was given five dollars to purchase one ingredient and were responsible for locating the item in store aisles, finding the cash register, and checking out as independently as possible. The ingredient list included pretzels, marshmallows and chocolate chips, among others.

The sixth graders in Daniel Kopetic's class also accompanied the group on the trip, and helped to make the trail mix. Together, the students in Mrs. Craine's and Mr. Kopetic's classes worked cooperatively on an assembly line to create mason jars filled with the mix. Students then attached a ribbon and decorated the jar to be sent off for the troops to enjoy. Also a big help in creating the trail mix and coordinating the trip was school psychologist Mrs. Beneville along with teacher assistants Mrs. Fusco, Ms. Schreiber and Mrs. Snaider.

The first-grade students in David Reilly's class at Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center joined forces with Jody Leibowitz's fourth-grade class at Winthrop Avenue School and Gail Passet's fifth-grade class at Shore Road School to participate in an "anti-bullying" presentation entitled “3 Cool Schools.” The students in all three classes have worked together throughout the school year via videoconferencing and written correspondence to share their views and feelings about stomping out bullying behavior. The students voted on an original slogan and had t-shirts printed with the slogan, "You're Not Cool If You Bully Like A Fool."

The focus of this program was to identify the role of a "bystander" and to learn how to react in an effective way to help others. On Thursday, June 2, the students joined together at the Shore Road School to act out original skits about bullying and then paused to ask the audience, "what would you do if you were a bystander in these situations?”

Principals Christine Augusto, Sally Curto, and Clifford Molinelli acted out their own skits and asked the students to problem solve various dilemmas. “It was an exciting and meaningful morning shared by all,” said Mrs. Leibowitz. Added Mr. Reilly, “The students demonstrated the core values of teamwork, integrity, and respect for others while they learned techniques to help stop bullying behaviors and become part of the solution.”

Fostering a Global Connection

Over the past few years, students in the Bellmore School District have been corresponding through videoconferences with fellow students in various countries throughout the world. Students have made connections with children from Poland, Scotland, Chile, Russia, India, and Uganda, just to name a few.

This year Winthrop Avenue Technology Assistant Carol Monaco arranged a global partnership between England native and fourth-grade teacher Phinola Baeza and Donna Nicholson, a fourth-grade teacher from a primary school in the small country town of Staffordshire, England. Throughout the year, the two classes have compared their lives and cultures. So when Mrs. Nicholson and her family traveled to New York in April, Mrs. Baeza and Mrs. Monaco decided to meet her for lunch. Mrs. Nicholson brought letters from her students and a British teddy bear for the class. Mrs. Baeza and Mrs. Monaco shared copies of the district’s newsletter, the Bellmore Buzz, a character education program pamphlet, a Winthrop Avenue planner, and letters from our students. The main topic of conversation was the children, the friendships they had made, and the letters they shared. They also discussed future communications between the two classes.

Bellmore Students Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

To get into the spirit of Cinco de Mayo, the students at Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore celebrated the Mexican holiday by creating Mexican flags, playing math BINGO in Spanish, reading a short story about the life of a Mexican boy their age, and snacking on chips and salsa, all while wearing homemade serapes that they constructed out of paper bags in their art classes. Foreign language teacher Lisa Goldberg, who teaches the Reinhard students Spanish twice a week for thirty minutes, coordinated the celebration and sang “La Beandera Mexicana” (“The Mexican Flag”) with the students.

Crazy for Chess

The kindergarten, first-grade, and second-grade students at Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore are working on their logic skills and problem-solving abilities through the game of chess. The Chess Club is a group of almost 200 students who meet once a week for four weeks, during their lunchtime recess, to learn and advance their chess skills. Offered through the PTA, the students receive their instruction from local chess masters, all of whom are members of the Long Island Chess Nuts.

The club, open to beginners as well as advanced players, allows students to learn and perfect their skills. Each week begins with a ten-minute lesson on the rules and strategies of chess; the remaining time is used for students to compete against each other, based upon skill level. During this time, the advisor walks around and offers advice and tips for each child to improve their game.

Open the Door

Continuing to stress the importance of educating the whole student, the Bellmore School District has incorporated the “7 Habits of Happy Kids” into their character education curriculum.

During the week of November 8, the third and fourth-grade students at Winthrop Avenue School participated in numerous activities revolving around the subject of bullying. On Monday, November 8, the students enjoyed a performance by Scot Cannon entitled “Open the Door.” The 45-minute program uses pantomime, music, and audience participation to look at the subject of bullying, anger, tolerance, and what to do when you’re having a bad day. To follow up with the performances, district social worker Joan Sass, visited classrooms to participate in an open dialogue with the students and to address any concerns, comments, or questions the students might have.

To conclude the week, the Squeaky Clean Band performed their “Pull Together” character education show, where students learned about working together as a team and respecting one another’s differences.

“We wanted a week, early in the school year, that emphasized good character and an anti-bullying theme to refer to for the remainder of the school year,” said Principal Sally Curto.

Letters to Soldiers

The third and fourth-grade students at Winthrop Avenue in Bellmore have been busy writing letters of support to many United States soldiers currently serving overseas. Third-grade teacher Amanda Kowalski, whose nephew Lance Corporal Michael Reyes is currently serving in the United States Marines, started the project with her class last spring and continued this year with her current class. The students are writing directly to the members of Lance Corporal Reyes’ unit and are personally addressing their letters to individual soldiers. “The letters bring these brave soldiers a much needed smile to remind them of home and all of those who support them,” said Miss Kowalski.

In participating in this project, the students demonstrate many of the district’s core values, specifically highlighting respect and dedication.

Bellmore Students Participate in National Anthem Day

In recognition of “The National Anthem Project,” a campaign launched in 2005 to celebrate “The Star-Spangled Banner” and raise awareness of the importance of school music, students in Laura Laude’s music classes at Shore Road School in Bellmore participated in National Anthem Day on September 14th and 15th.

During the lesson, which utilized SMART Board technology, the students learned the history of “The Star-Spangled Banner” beginning with the date it was originally written (1814) to the year of its official inauguration as the national anthem (1931). Additionally, the students participated in a play, “O’er the Ramparts,” in which they reenacted what occurred during the writing of “The Star-Spangled Banner”; reviewed a Time magazine article that asked readers if the national anthem should be changed to a different patriotic song; and worked in small groups to assemble a puzzle of the song featuring only the melodic contour.

“The song is an important part of our history, and the students should be aware of the words and the history behind them,” said Ms. Laude.

Keeping Curriculum Current

This summer District teachers and administrators worked together to revise different aspects of the curriculum. The summer curriculum writing projects help keep the district on the forefront of education and provide students with the most up-to-date information available. Staff members also participated in several professional development workshops.

With an ever-increasing emphasis on technology and higher academic and social growth standards, teachers learned efficient ways of employing strategies and techniques for assisting their students. A few of the professional development areas included “Utilizing SMART Response Technology in the Classroom” and “Using iPods as Your Classroom Listening Center.” Additionally, elementary educator Terri Ercole facilitated a class entitled “Revisiting 6+1 Writing Traits,” during which she taught Bellmore teachers effective and creative ways to teach students how to learn and grow as writers. The “6 +1” workshop has been an ongoing process, beginning the previous summer.

Teachers also worked collaboratively on a number of instruction and social areas, including generating fifth and sixth-grade team building activities, aligning the sixth-grade math curriculum, and creating a cross-section of monthly, thematic, and academic activities to enhance the kindergarten literacy centers.

“The bar continues to be raised,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph S. Famularo. “To insure that Bellmore students continue to compete on a local and global level, we must provide them with the tools to succeed.”

Board of Education members, administrators, parents, and invited guests proudly attended the graduation of the Shining Stars as the students were rewarded for their six years of hard work.

As the students pondered their move up to Grand Avenue in the fall, they recalled fond memories of elementary school and the valuable lessons that have prepared them for a lifetime of learning and achieving.

“It’s hard to believe that the school year has ended and the sixth graders are waiting to receive their diplomas and start a new chapter in their lives,” stated Principal Christine Augusto. “Today marks a new journey – one that has yet to be written. Set goals for yourself and reach those goals. You are the author of your own life story.”

Offering advice to the sixth graders making the transition to the middle school, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph S. Famularo stated, “Today is a day to be proud of all the skills you have mastered, because with them you will succeed in doing even more. I have no doubt that each and every one of you has the potential to do something special with your lives.” Added Board of Education President Janet Goller, “Your life is a do-it-yourself project, so build it wisely and don’t be afraid to follow your dreams.”

During the ceremony, guests were treated to a “Student Welcome” read by Jordana Pontes, “Class History” by Amanda Steinberg, a “Farewell to Shore Road” by Paul Cooney and performances by the orchestra, band, and the entire sixth-grade graduating class. Smith’s “Liturgical Fanfare,” and the class sang Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie’s “We Are the World,” with student narratives highlighting how the Shining Stars made it a “brighter day” for their communities – school, local, and global – throughout the year.
