A Concert for Friends

Dressed in variations of pink, red, and white, the fourth-grade chorus at Winthrop Avenue School in the Bellmore School District celebrated Valentine’s Day by performing for family, friends, and fellow classmates. The Friendship Concert featured student-musicians singing, dancing, and playing Orff instruments - such as xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels – as well as recorder solos. Students sang a variety of songs, including a song entitled “Best Friends” written by students Georgie Yandolino, Frankie Yandolino, and Kristina Hyman, and a sing-along to “Valentine.”

The Year of the Dragon

Students at Bellmore’s Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center concluded their lesson on the Chinese New Year with a special performance by Chinese acrobat Li Liu. Sponsored by the PTA-Cultural Arts committee, Li Liu treated students to her act of balancing, plate spinning, trick cycling, juggling, and ribbon dancing. Students also learned about various aspects of Chinese culture, geography, and language, as well as the historical significance of the featured Chinese dances.

“Chinese New Year is much like Christmas in the United States,” said Liu. “Our celebration lasts for 15 days. One of the most exciting parts of Chinese New Year for the children is the hóngbāo. They are red envelopes given as gifts that contain money.”

Li Liu also discussed the significance of the color red in Chinese culture. “Red is a special color in China. We believe it brings good luck and pushes the bad things away.”

Valentines for Veterans

To express their gratitude to those who have served in the military, the fifth and sixth-grade students at Bellmore’s Shore Road School created Valentine’s Day cards, which will be distributed to local veterans. Students used construction paper, glitter, markers and, most importantly, well-chosen words of thanks to honor these brave men and women. The cards were sent to veterans through Hempstead Town Councilwoman Angie M. Cullin’s office.

It’s a Pirate’s Adventure in Bellmore

Second-grade choral students at Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore took their audience on a tour of the world as they hunted for pirates’ treasure. Opening their Rising Stars concert, the students, dressed as pirates, animals, and other vibrantly colored characters, sang “A Pirate’s Adventure” as they set sail to the Caribbean looking for their treasure. After singing “Caribbean Amphibian,” the pirates discovered their “booty” could not be found and took their audience of parents, family, and fellow classmates to Mexico, Ireland, and India before ending their journey in Hawaii. Conducted by music teacher Randi Andersen, the students taught their audience, “The true treasure is not something you can hold, like gold or silver. It's inside of us just waiting to shine.”

A Super Story

Honoring a tradition he began as principal of Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center and continued as Superintendent of Schools, Bellmore Superintendent Dr. Joseph S. Famularo visited each kindergarten classroom. During his visit, Dr. Famularo read Sean Covey’s Just the Way I Am, which focuses on Habit 1 – be proactive – from his novel The 7 Habits of Happy Kids. Once the story was completed, the students and Dr. Famularo discussed the theme and Habit 1. Before leaving, the superintendent donated a copy of the story to each classroom’s individual library and reminded the students that they should “read only on the days you eat.”
