During Red Ribbon Week, held on Nov. 2-6, Shore Road students demonstrated the Leadership Principles “Be Proactive” and “Continuous Improvement” by reflecting on how to make healthy choices in their lives

Social worker Christine Davison, who annually directs Red Ribbon Week, said, “Taking care of our minds, bodies and hearts is more important than ever. Students took extra time to reflect on their behaviors and to assess their healthy choices. They were also asked to think about how to be respectful to others with kind words and actions.”

The annual Red Ribbon campaign is the nation’s oldest and largest drug awareness campaign and one that teaches students how to develop positive, healthy habits early in life.

To start the week, students dressed in red to demonstrate their Red Ribbon Week support, and each student received a red ribbon to wear throughout the celebration. Students were also invited to sign a Red Ribbon Pledge during lunch, promising to make healthy and respectful choices. The pledges were displayed throughout the building. Retired Nassau County police officer John Groshans also gave a cyber safety Zoom presentation, sharing valuable information on how to stay safe online.

Each day of the week, students showed their support by wearing their favorite sweats to demonstrate that “Making Healthy Choices is No Sweat” and their craziest socks and hats to symbolize that they are making healthy choices from “head to toe.” To end the week, the students wore pajamas or comfortable pants to say that “Our dreams will come true by making healthy and respectful choices.
