Winthrop Avenue students continuously improved and demonstrated dedication to their reading skills through participation in the PTA-sponsored Pick a Reading Partner event. This year’s annual reading activity’s superhero theme, “Grab a Mask, Grab a Book and Read,” challenged students to collectively read 35,000 minutes during the month of October.

PARP is a New York State PTA Program, which encourages parents, staff and community to collaborate in the building of a reading partnership between home and school and to motivate students to love reading.

The month of reading culminated with Principal Sally Curto performing the Principal’s Challenge to award students for having reached their PARP school reading goal. Dressed as Batgirl, Ms. Curto visited all of the school’s 18 classrooms, leaving a bat clue, and made it back to the main office in under three minutes. The students had to synergize and collectively solve the final clue, which was “We are Bellmore Stars.” Deirdre Golden’s fourth grade class successfully compiled all of the clues and solved the mystery message.
