Sixth grade students at Shore Road School in Bellmore participated in a virtual program with the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium, which allowed them to take an in-depth look at the Vanderbilt Mummy purchased in 1931 by William Vanderbilt and on display in Northport.

Students learned about the acquisition of the mummy from Egypt and watched a slideshow with photographs of Vanderbilt's trip to Egypt. There was also a discussion of the history of Egyptian dynasties. Students then viewed and analyzed detailed x-rays of the mummy to determine age, gender, health, social class and cause of death. Also studied was the sarcophagus and the steps involved in the mummification process.

The program culminated with the students creating a ushabti bookmark, using hieroglyphs to write their name.
