Sixth grade students in Carolyn Acevedo’s class at Shore Road School were excited when classmate Suhayla Uddin spoke to them about the customs and traditions celebrated during the month of Ramadan. She wanted to share information about this holiday so that her peers would better understand why schools are closed on May 13 for Eid-Al-Fitr.

“Ramadan Kareem!,” Suhayla said, as she wished a blessed and generous month during this time in her Muslim faith.

Using the SMARTBoard, Suhayla explained how and why her family fasts during this time, as well as the foods eaten to “break-fast.” She also explained that Eid-Al-Fitr is one of the highest holy days for practicing Muslims who celebrate by eating delicious foods and dressing up for the festivities. She explained that the moon and stars are important symbols of Ramadan and Eid, because the dates of the holidays are based on the moon. The Shore Road leader also made time to answer her classmates’ thoughtful questions.

Because lanterns are also an important part of Ramadan tradition, Suhayla then guided the class on how to make paper lanterns to hang during the month of Ramadan.
