Fifth grade Reader Leaders in Jennifer Lucchetti’s and Regina Harten’s class at Shore Road School caught a bit of March Madness and read for 12,519 minutes during a five week period.

The students’ love of reading was demonstrated during a March Madness College Basketball Reading Tournament. Divided into two teams, students competed by recording their reading at home each night to advance them in the brackets. During class, they learned new reading strategies and then independently answered relevant questions, which allowed each student the opportunity to win free-throw shots for daily prizes.

“These highly motivated activities had the students engaged and looking forward to their daily reading competition,” Ms. Lucchetti said.

Gabriella Slavin was the winner, having read a total of 2,645 minutes, and Eli Tarter placed second having read 1,260 minutes. Tournament VIP’s were JJ Farber, Gianna Massari

Tiffany Sotirokos and Christopher Taylor.
