In recognition of March 14 as Pi Day, sixth-graders in Carolyn Acevedo’s and Gloria Panella’s classes at Shore Road School hosted a Pi Day celebration. During the celebration, students determined the value of the mathematical constant 3.14 by measuring both the circumference and diameter of an edible pie and applying the measurements to the formula for the circumference of a circle.

The classes also created Pi plates and chains. By assigning each digit a color and writing an expanded form of Pi in a spiral pattern around a paper plate, the students created a chain out of strips of colored paper that will be used to decorate the school hallways. The students will use the colored chain to create a frequency chart of the initial digits that comprise Pi to determine which digits appear the most and least.
