Reinhard students sharpened their fire safety skills through attendance at an assembly with members of Bellmore Fire Department’s Rescue 7 team.
Captain Thomas Stoerger and firefighters Marc Fiderer, Chris O’Brien and Bob Taylor discussed knowing how to call 911 or the fire department, memorizing personal addresses and cross streets, the “stop, drop and roll” technique and having an exit strategy.

In addition to an emphasis on fire safety strategies, the goal of the program was also to develop a connection with the students, who are often afraid of uniformed firemen. Firefighter Taylor dressed in his fire gear to reassure the students that firefighters are not scary and made them promise they would never hide from a fireman.

“Friends help friends,” Captain Stoerger said. “When a fireman comes to your house, we’re friends because we want to help you.”

The students also heard what a smoke detector sounds like and learned to change its batteries with the annual time changes. The highlight of the trip, however, was a chance to climb aboard the fire truck.
