The excitement was palpable as swat cars, police motorcycles, a drone and superheroes invaded Winthrop Avenue School playground as students waved orange bandanas to welcome members of the Nassau County Police Department on Oct. 30. The purpose of the dramatic visit called Cops, Coffee and Treats was to remind students to be safe while trick or treating on Halloween.

NCPD Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder, who rallied the students prior to the main event, reminded them to check candy before opening it, stay on the sidewalk, not to speak with strangers and to avoid unknown cars. He also told the students to have respect for their teachers and the police officers who were there to entertain them with an important message.

“The men and women in blue are the guys who keep you safe,” Ryder said. “They are dressed up today just so you can have fun.” 

The superhero police officers jumped out of swat cars and ran through the playground, shaking the hands of students. They also distributed gifts of frisbees and Halloween sacks to collect candy. 
 
Commissioner Ryder said there was a bigger purpose to the day’s visit. “We are here today for community relations and to make sure these children stay safe,” he said.
