Teacher showing student how to hold violin.

Music is ingrained in the innovative education found within Bellmore Public Schools. At Reinhard Early Childhood Center, students get an early start on learning advanced musical skills by plucking their first notes on a violin.

Music teachers Kelly Kozma and Joanna Rocco guide second graders in the auditorium on correct playing and resting positions and how to play basic beginner notes. Easing into the new instrument, Rising Star Leaders learn helpful tips, such as holding their fingers in the shape of an “L” on the fingerboard to correctly play their first chords. Starting with a single note and advancing to two, the young musicians practice reading music – including rests – while getting a grasp on a new instrument. As a group, classes are challenged to maintain an equal tempo while playing the right notes.

Students learned how to pluck their first notes. Classmates were challenged to remain an equal tempo. Music teacher Joanna Rocco helped a student pick up a new instrument.
