A special presentation at Winthrop Avenue School in the Bellmore School District brought the zoo to students, offering up-close views and animal-based facts on Oct. 21.
“Ooky Spooky Animals” presented by the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse featured animal experts, ready to answer the questions of curious Winning Star Leaders in Mrs. McClenahan’s third grade class. Students were wowed when they learned that tarantulas shed their exoskeletons by observing a preserved molt. The class was transported to Madagascar as they witnessed hissing cockroaches, one of the largest species of cockroaches. Additionally, a tiger’s skull showed how massive one would be up close, and students turned their heads to compare to the wide range an owl can turn. Throughout the presentation, students learned facts about the animals’ habitats and asked thoughtful questions.
