students in classroom by fish tank

Daily care of the aquarium in the main office of Winthrop Avenue School in the Bellmore School District is a student-led effort. At the Oct. 21 board of education meeting, Winning Star Leaders shared their important tasks with trustees.

Dubbed Winthrop’s Aquarium Leaders, six students explained their daily tasks when it comes to taking care of the tank’s fish. Each morning, the students carefully observe the tank and keep records of the number of fish and the water temperature. They also track the tank’s cleanliness such as algae buildup or plants that need replacing and feed the fish. When it’s time for a new group of students to take up the role, the current Aquarium Leaders train the incoming team.
