Winthrop Avenue School Winning Star Leaders mirrored the teachings and messages of Martin Luther King Jr. through an eye-catching creation.
Fourth graders in Alexandra Grodin’s class read the book “Martin’s Big Words” by Doreen Rappaport, a picture book biography of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that brings his profound message to young readers through powerful collage art and Dr. King’s own words. Students selected a quote that was inspirational and reflected on its meaning, identifying its personal connection to their own life. After watching a rendition of Dr. King’s “I have a dream” speech read by fourth graders in Washington, D.C. at the Lincoln Memorial, they concluded by creating stained glass crafts, reflecting the diverse society Dr. King advocated for. The projects are hung from their classroom window alongside their quote reflections.
