Winthrop Science Fair

Knowledge of the scientific method was showcased at the Winthrop Avenue School Science Fair in the Bellmore School District on Feb. 12 as Winning Star Leaders presented their weekslong research.

Before finding their topic, third graders learned about the scientific method, including forming a hypothesis, testing for variables and reaching a conclusion. Working solo or with partners, students brainstormed a project that would exercise their skills. Dozens of unique topics had students test physical attributes, such as pulse rate or the functions of a heart, while others put together impressive crafts. Volcanoes showed how mentos and soda combined created different eruptions, pots of plants were grown using different liquids and circuits were completed with different objects. Each student received a certificate signifying their successful exploration of the scientific method.
