Fifth graders from Shore Road School in the Bellmore School District made their way to Reinhard Early Childhood Center on April 21 to celebrate Earth Day by leading activities with their younger peers.
Fifth grade Shining Star Leaders in Ms. Osterhoudt and Mrs. Padula’s class made a visit to Reinhard and presented an engaging lesson for pre-kindergartners. Enjoying the spring weather outdoors, peers flew kites that showed how the wind can help form flying creations. With second graders, Shore Road students led a lesson on IXL, a digital learning platform. Fifth graders guided second graders through the basics as they responded to reading, math and science related prompts. On the classrooms’ SmartBoards, fifth graders reviewed the answers as second graders competed to see who could answer the fastest. Some of the fifth graders had a great experience assisting their younger peers in the classroom they once learned in.
“We get to be role models and set an example,” said one fifth grader. “I really like teaching other students new things.”
“These visits help give students the opportunity to showcase the skills they’ve developed while teaching others at the same time,” Ms. Osterhoudt said. “The experience builds confidence and is a nice surprise as they return to an old setting.”
