Shore Road students win first place at Long Island Hackathon

Weeks of practice paid off for the Shore Road School Hackathon team in the Bellmore School District as they came out on top after facing off against teams from across Long Island in the KidOYO Code Conquest competition.

The team of Shining Star Leaders, dubbed the Kentucky Fried Coders, made their way to Manhasset on April 24 to compete against 23 other teams. The event was a high-stakes strategy game in the style of “Risk” themed around the ancient Incan civilization. As the team solved complex computing challenges by creating code, they took over pieces of land that they later had to defend against their rivals. It was a fierce competition that had the young coders using collaboration and teamwork as they raced against the clock. Shore Road’s team was ultimately the first-place winner with the most points. Led by teachers and coaches Lauren DeStefano and Lauren McHale, students made sure they were ready for the challenge by dedicating themselves to practice during recess.
