It’s an exciting time for young coders at Shore Road School in the Bellmore School District as they work collaboratively to code their way to liftoff with a fleet of flying drones.
During their regular Library, Research and Tech Skills sessions, sixth graders are challenged with advanced-level coding through Python to create directions for drones to follow. Steps in their code includes a range of instructions, from taking flight, following a path and finally landing. Shining Star Leaders showed their coding skills by having their drones create shapes in the air before completing their flight. Teams must utilize teamwork and effective communication to complete their tasks. As the drone program flies forward, students will be challenged to guide their drones on more complex routes. In the Bellmore School District, students begin developing their coding knowledge at an early level at the Reinhard Early Childhood Center before continuing to develop their skills at Winthrop Avenue School with the coding language Hatch!

Historical figures come to life through sculpture at Shore Road School

Sixth graders at Shore Road School thumbnail265348

Sixth graders at Shore Road School in the Bellmore School District recently brought historical figures to life through lessons on sculpture.
Students started the project by learning about the human skeletal system and joints. Sixth-grade Shining Star Leaders created a scaled wire armature which represented bones, then added bends to represent joints. Then, the figures slowly came to life as students added recycled newspaper and tape. Using facts and imagery learned through research about a historical figure, students modeled time-appropriate dress and details using wheat paste and colored paper. The project provided insight on individuals who left lasting impacts while showing that art has something for everyone.
