Fifth graders at Shore Road School in the Bellmore Public School District recently put their knowledge of substances to the test in a colorful science lab experiment.

Students in Graceann McClenahan’s class worked in groups and discussed the properties of substances when they are mixed, including how a mixture exists in a different form than its original parts. Shining Stars placed a small amount of food dye on a piece of paper, which was dipped into a cup of water. As the water worked its way up the paper, students observed the food dye separate into different colors, discovering that it is a mixture. After the experiment, students were able to bring home the eye-catching pieces of paper.
